A992 Cost vs. A36 Structural engineering general
Nov 04, 2009 · A992 is the standard steel type for wide flange shapes. A36 is standard for angles. You will be paying quite a premium to specify A992 angles, if you can even find a mill that will produce them. Stick with A36.
ASTM A36 VS ASTM A992 Steel Beams CR4 Discussion
The original 50ksi steels couldn't meet some of the A36 requirements, A992 combines them both in one steel. If you order A36, you might get A992, quite legally. I think that angles and tees etc. are available in A36, but I think that beams are all A992, but as with everything, I could be mistaken.

n just five years, ASTM A992 50 ksisteel has become the dominant ma terial specification for wide flange shapes, solidly displacing ASTM A36 wide flanges. In fact, ASTM A992 is so commonly rolled that it now costs less than ASTM A36 wide flange shapes—and you would be hard pressed to find an ASTM A36 wide flange with a yield as low as 36 ksi.
STEEL INDUSTRY EMBRACES A992
Bulletin #3, March 1997. The new A992 Specification covers W shapes (rolled wide flange shapes) intended for use in building framing. For S, M, and HP shapes and channels, A36 or A572 Gr. 50 should still be specified. For angles and plates, A36 should still be speci fied (for more information, see the three part series, “Are You Properly Specifying
